ShinyHappy - Thoughts for October 4th - 14th

I haven't been feeling well the last couple of days and was afraid that I was getting Colin's cold, but it doesn't seem to be turning into one, thankfully. I was feeling like a truck ran me over this afternoon but perked up a bit when I got a phone call to tell me that I got the job I interviewed for on Tuesday! Woo hoo! I start working this coming Tuesday and will be full time, Monday to Friday until at least the end of January and very possibly until March sometime.
I'm very pleased. The job is a nice easy office-type job and we'll be far less stressed financially while I'm there. Paying rent is cool! So is eating food! I really have to kick butt while working there so I can get other work with them when my contract is up. It also looks like there's a good chance that the dirty old 99 bus will take me where I need to go in Kanata, so it'll actually be even simpler than getting to the location that's closer to home. Not having to transfer rockz my world!
Speaking of contracts; I made a verbal contract with Andrew that stipulated that if I got this job we'd get another cat for Mong to play with. So now I have this job. Soon will be the time of getting a new cat! We're going to go to the Humane Society soon and see if there's a cat that seems right for us and Mong. I think that Mong needs a cat who'll want to play as much as he does. If not we'll have a cat that doesn't want to play as much as he does and there'll be cat fights and fur flying because Mong will tease and tease and tease another cat while trying to get it to play. I think another neutered male near to his age is a good idea. You never know, though. Going to the Humane Society is a dangerous game to play when you're a cat lover and want to bring every cat home, especially the ones that nobody else wants.
Ah, well. It'll work out in the end.
I found a super-cute picture of Mong playing with Andrew's old backpack that I haven't shared here before, for some reason. I took it a month or so ago and it's just sitting all lonely in my huge file of Mong pics. I love this picture because he has his tooth sticking out all goofy-like. Enjoy!

10/12/05 Bunnies, bunnies, it must be bunnies!
I am very happy with this cooler weather. The heat has been turned on in the building. I remember last year that we were freezing before the super actually turned the heat on, but this year it didn't get too terribly cold. This is also the first time in years that I've lived in one place longer than twelve month, it occurs to me. How weird not to be packing and moving again.
We've had some interesting things going on in the last wee while. Andrew and I went to Kingston for Thanksgiving dinner with my family. We went down on Sunday and came back on Monday so we left Mong home alone this time. I had a great time seeing my mom and sisters and all the nieces and nephews (crazy as they are) and since my mom does make the best stuffing and pie in the whole world her Thanksgiving dinners are always something worth traveling for. Andrew gets all vacant and drooly when talking about her pie crusts. I don't answer because I'm too busy eating stuffing.
I didn't see enough of my mom because she left for work at an incredibly early hour on Monday morning, unfortunately, but I got to visit with my sisters on Monday afternoon before we left town. Mom was getting home from work right around the time we were leaving town, so at least I got to give her another hug.
So we came home on Monday and I was busy getting my nerves all frayed because I had a job interview on Tuesday. Yes, a job interview with the totally cool company that I did some temp work for a few months back where I totally rocked my data entry skillz. They called me up because they need to fill some contract positions and still had my resume. I was nervous about it, though, and since my coping skills are practically nil I was also stressed about having to navigate myself to the Congress Center to go to a Chinese art show with Andrew's mom after my interview. It's another one of those things where Andrew understands intellectually that I have a lot of fear issues regarding traveling alone, but he could never comprehend it since the idea is so totally alien to him. He is very helpful, though, and always provides me with clear and precise directions when he can't actually take me somewhere himself.
I remembered exactly how to get to the interview since it was at the location that I worked at, so at least that part didn't have me stressed. I have to say that I think it was the best interview I've ever given in my life. The woman interviewing me remembered me and seemed to be quite pleased with the work I'd done for them previously. Anyhow, the whole vibe of the interview felt great and I'm very optimistic about my chances. The company is moving to Kanata in December which is a bit of a commute by bus, but it doesn't seem that it'll be too awful.
However, if I don't get this job I may have another jobbish opportunity that I won't describe since I don't have all the details yet. It seems that it wouldn't be as much of a moneymaker as the contract job I just interviewed for, but it is something that I'd definitely have if I wanted it. Updates will ensue!
I met Andrew's mom at the Congress Center (which I made my way to all right in the end) later Tuesday afternoon and after some initial miscommunication in where we'd be meeting we found each other and went in to the art show. I noticed as we went in that the room was divided into two sections. We browsed the first half and were done fairly quickly, so as we reached the front of the room I stepped over and peeked into the other half, not sure if all the paintings there were part of the same exhibit or not. Andrew's mom followed me and before we knew it a woman stepped up to us and asked if we'd like a guided tour of the paintings. I asked if they were part of the same exhibit and she said that this half of the room was an invitation-only portion by the organizers of the exhibit, but that she'd show us around. So, we went with her, although I wasn't sure about it and Andrew's mom didn't look too certain either. It turned out to be a showing of art painted by Falun Dafa practitioners. The paintings were shown in four parts, some depicting the torture of practioners in China, some showing the spiritual realms connecting with the physical. Our guide gave very, very thorough explanations of each painting and was obviously incredibly earnest and dedicated to the practice. We were both too polite to cut her off in the middle of her tour, even though it seemed to take forever. So, we endured it and came out the other side better people, I'm sure.
On Tuesday night Andrew and I went to see Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit with Colin and Jen and a few other people. It was super-funny. Anything with tons of bunnies is a good time, and this was bunny-tastic. Combining English accents and wit with a surplus of slightly zany wee bunnies is pure genius, if you ask me. We had a lovely time and even though Colin was feeling under the weather with a terrible cold he felt it was totally worth it to buck up and see the movie. His secret weapon? A whole box of lotion tissues. Gotta have the lotion. And if I catch his cold, that is what I'll use.
And lastly, a picture of Mong looking strung out on socks as he peeks out of one of Andrew's dresser drawers:

10/06/05 Yes, my socks and panties live in the same drawer.
You are Kaylee, the ship's mechanic. You are cute
as a button, chipper, cheerful and optimistic,
though you panic in a fight. Engines make you
hot and you prefer having sex next to a big,
humming thing.
Which Firefly character are you?
brought to you by QuizillaI found this cool test at Colin's Weblog. I'm pleased to be Kaylee. She's cute, and Andrew is in luuuuuurve with her. If you're a Firefly fan make sure you take the test and find out who you are. Try to ignore the poor spelling at the test site, because it's worth it to be someone like Jayne or Wash, right?
I have some cute pictures of Mong that I want to upload but my computer decided tonight that it hates the digital camera and won't play nice. It does this from time to time and I suspect it's mostly when the camera batteries are running low, so I'm charging up some fresh new batteries for it in my snazzy new battery charger and will be able to show off some more pictures for you in the next entry (I hope).
I went out for coffee with Shannon last night at Bridgehead and have discovered a new croissant obsession. Their croissants are amazing! I want one right now! I might start squirreling money away in my sock/underwear drawer so I can sneak off and buy croissants without anyone knowing. It's also the drawer in which Mong leaps all the time, though, so it might not be the most secure place to hide money.
Speaking of Mong and drawers; yesterday I was in the kitchen and left the cutlery drawer open while I turned around to grab some clean cutlery from the drying rack so I could put it away. I turned back to find that Mong had hopped up into the drawer and was trying to figure out if he could fit in it further back. Andrew always insists that Mong is a Jeanes, and I'm more than willing to let him and his family take credit for the little spazz. My cats have never jumped into cutlery drawers. Not even Mang (to the best of my knowledge) and she's a cat with a 'strong personality' as well. I've told Andrew that if things ever go bad and we split up, he gets custody. He looked afeared.

We're home from our lovely weekend away. Actually, we've been home for over a day but I didn't have the energy for a weblog entry last night. Such is life. Our weekend really was great, though. I caught a ride to TO with Colin and Jen on Friday night and we arrived in time to have some good quality chat time with Dan and May. Andrew arrived a wee while later, having been doing conference stuff until quite late. We all managed to be in the same room at the same time for a while, though, and it was wonderful.
On Saturday I did get to spend some quality time with May as I'd anticipated, and it was fantastic. Dan's Aikido test was on Saturday and May and I went to that, which was totally awesome. Dan did well on his test and I got to see him getting attacked by three guys at once. He did a lot of throwing them around, which was really quite cool. Later in the day Marcus met me, May and Noah and we all went back to chez Friedman for even more hanging-out wonderfulness. We hadn't seen Marcus since Johnstock, which is just wrong! So we ate yummy pasta and watched the season's premiere of The Amazing Race: Family Edition. The 'Family Edition' tacked on the end there makes the quality of the current season debatable, but I'm giving it a chance even though it looks like it will be a less-than-amazing race due to the fact that they don't look like they're going to be leaving the USA anytime soon. Or possibly at all.
Sunday brought a trip to Greg's Ice Cream! Oh, Greg's Ice Cream. How I do miss thee. Marcus met us there and we all went for a walk on Philosopher's Walk, joined by a very cool and awesome friend of May's that we randomly ran into on the street. Michele met us at Philosopher's Walk and we all chatted and laughed and wandered. Noah was thrilled to be somewhere that he could run around, as he was working off an incredible buzz from the chocolate ice cream he'd eaten that had him bouncing off the walls of Greg's Ice Cream. A group of young women had made a human pyramid and after they got up and left Noah ran to the spot where they'd been and made his own human pyramid of one. A pyramid of cute, actually.
Speaking of the pyramid of young women ... heh heh heh. I was sitting on a bench with Andrew and Marcus when the women made their pyramid of pretty. There were only five of them, so there were three on the bottom and two on the top, meaning that their pyramid didn't have a peak. Marcus noted this and shocked us deeply by saying, "I'd like to climb on that pyramid." (I may have his exact wording slightly incorrect, but believe you me, that was the meaning.) We were highly amused and Marcus explained that it was because they were missing their peak, but you should have seen his face when the group of peak-less women walked past and one shouted to him, "You should have climbed on!" (I again must say that this might not be the exact wording but ... you know.)
Marcus was SO embarassed. It was awesome.
After all this we went back to May and Dan's and again had awesome hanging out funtimes. I ended up cutting Marcus' hair for him again, and even gave Jen's hair a slight trim. I'm going to have to research some haircutting techniques, though, and use Marcus as my guineapig. Ha ha ha!
We were sad to leave on Monday, but leave we had to. Happily, Jen and Colin asked us to go see Serenity with them tonight, so we did. I've been dying to see this movie and I know that there are those who are going to see it that will read this so I won't give anything away. I enjoyed the movie. Parts of it made me feel manipulated unecessarily and I think that Joss Whedon could definitely have done some things differently. Or at least I wish he had done some things differently. It more or less ties the series up into a messily wrapped package, so I'm satisfied with that, at least.
That's what we've been up to. It's now been over a year that we've lived in this apartment here in Ottawa. It's been a rough year, but there have been so many big bright spots that are lit up by friends and family that I have to say I'm a lucky, lucky person indeed.
